Friends! It's been entirely too long! My apologies for taking so long to update the blog. I went into rehearsal for Dreamgirls in April, and the rest of my life was put on hold. After closing the show July 30th, I've been spending the past month learning how to be a human again, but I'm back and have so much to share! I plan to blog about my experience playing Deena Jones, but today I'm giving you a good ole Dr. Aron Method update.
About a year ago I decided to return to steroids to improve my quality of life. While my skin has definitely improved, everyday I learn more and more how important it is to find a diet that is compatible with my lifestyle, while also healing to my body. I talk about it all in the new vlog below. Check it out and stay tuned for more. I promise to not disappear for 8 months again! Peace and much love y'all.

Lauren,

So I just found your YouTube page and literally somehow picked the 2 videos , your first video about going back on steroids with the Dr Aaron(?) metod then your most recient video about the update and your going plant based diet. So, first off, you're hilarious. I know those videos aren't your skits or whatever, but it's comical to me to see you scratch during the video..I was scratching something at around the same timing throughout. I don't want to go crazy with my comment but I wanted to say thank you for those two videos...I'm currently on my third dose of a prednisone taper after doing this crazy detox that had me bed ridden with wheeling swollen eczema. So I know I'm going to start tapering again and I'm terrified of my skin going back. I don't use topical steroids hardly for years but I was using protopic on my eyelids and my upper lip as needed for 8-9 years now. Now I'm like you, my neck, arms, face, ears, everywhere you have it except my hands (you poor thing). So I'm doing my Consulting of both the internet and I'm going to see an endocrinologist and dermatologist, although I feel you on how I almost just don't want to go back to the dermatologist...they never help me log term and I can't live on prednisone my whole life, although my skin his fabulous right now. Also, you weren't itching nearly as much in the second video, but girl the inside of your arms I can tell you had an itching fit, I do the same thing. So luckily for me I love in Hawaii on a rural island called Kauai and my brother-in-law is a farmer and we have total access to the freshest of foods that totally set me up for a plant based diet. Except I'm like you, I LOVE FOOD, good food too, some of my good friends are chefs and my wife is a bar manager. Wtf am I supposed to do?! Anyway, like you, I've known for awhile I should go to a plant based diet but I've never actually done it. My question to you is what are you peramiters? Do you follow someone else on YouTube for this? Do you eat a lot of fruits? Do you eat more often than before? Do you stay away from certain veggies like nightshades or supposed histamine foods? ... please share. Thank you again, sorry this comment is long but I got excited about how much I related to your story. You're awesome, an inspiration and a breath of honest fresh air which dig. So, thank you.

Aloha,
Emily

Hey Emily! Thank you so much for the positive feedback. And yes girl, I understand. I got so frustrated trying out different dermatologists and them not knowing what to do. As far as my diet goes, I'm not following specific parameters at the moment. I've gone on so many super strict diets in the past and they never lasted. I would always stress when I didn't eat the right thing and try and figure out what triggered the most recent flare. It drove me crazy. My focus now is lifestyle change rather than committing to a diet right away. This way I can figure out what works for me, what makes me feel best and what I can maintain.

I'm focusing on eating a lot more fresh veggies. I try not to eat too much fruit because a lot of sugar definitely irritates my skin. I also try not to do a lot of grains, but I'm finding now that I've started rehearsal I need the carbs to keep me satisfied. My favorites are quinoa, wild rice and sweet potatoes. I try to stay away from rice, corn and soy. I've also been trying to find more stuff that I can grab and go. I would also drive myself crazy trying to cook every single thing I ate. I like Siete brand products. They have almond flour tortillas and grain free tortilla chips made out of cassava.

I've also looked into Dr. Sebi's guidelines. All the foods on his list are alkaline. I'm not at that point yet where I'm eating a Dr. Sebi approved diet, but I figured cutting out meat was the first step then I could build upon that. I find a lot of recipes on Pinterest and I've found stuff on Ty's Conscious Kitchen online. I also just started following this woman on Instagram @thegoodvibrationsbook. She's about to release a cook book with Dr. Sebi approved recipes and I tried making her alkaline meatballs. They were really good. I hope this helped!

I think the biggest thing for me has been learning how to separate food from social events. I can eat before I go out, or bring my own meal, or pick a restaurant that has options for me. I need to move somewhere like Hawaii for all of that sun! My skin does better in warmer climates and salt water. I was in Haiti for a week last December and I felt like my skin was glowing. I hope you're enjoying the sun and all of that fresh food you have access to. Take advantage of it, girl! Take care.

I'm Lauren, aka Just Du Pree, and I want to thank you for reading. This is a space where I share my very personal journey healing from eczema and topical steroid withdrawal (among other things), life lessons I've learned along the way, and occasionally the thoughts of an awkward Black girl (no Issa Rae). I'm a performer and filmmaker, so if you feel so inclined, pop over here to see what goes on in my mind on the regular. If you like what you see, you can stay up to date with my work here. Much love, friends!
